“I think it’s good to be exposed to a wide range of ideas. We get so caught up in our contemporary view of things, and treat that as almost the only view or the most important view, like everyone who came before us was just wrong…I like that in FYP we look at the ideas for what they are and not just as some artifact.”
Why did you choose King’s?
I liked that King’s had the advantages of a smaller school, but…because of its agreement with Dalhousie about classes, offers such a wide variety of classes that a small school on its own wouldn’t have enough faculty or enough students for…[Also] I liked the concept of the Foundation Year Program, moving sort of chronologically through time from the ancient world to the modern day and looking at the thoughts and ideas that people have had at various points in history.
Do you believe it’s important to study the humanities?
I think it’s good to be exposed to a wide range of ideas. We get so caught up in our contemporary view of things, and treat that as almost the only view or the most important view, like everyone who came before us was just wrong…I like that in FYP we look at the ideas for what they are and not just as some artifact.
Is King’s changing you as a person in any way?
Being exposed to all of these new ideas and new texts and things that I’d never heard of or even really considered before, has already changed my thinking around so many things so much. I finally realized that Set, the ancient Egyptian God of Chaos, is the one true God and I’ve converted to worshipping him alone. And just think, if I hadn’t come here perhaps I would never have encountered him!
Have you mapped out your future?
I’m planning to major in science…I find a lot of the HOST (History of Science and Technology) courses really interesting and I find it interesting how King’s combines sciences and arts.
What was your reaction upon receiving this scholarship?
In 2015…I decided King’s is the school for me. And so I was like, ‘I’m going to apply for the Donald R. Sobey Family Scholarship, it’s going to be great.’ I decided that then. It was on the vision board…but I didn’t expect it actually to happen, even though I did work very hard towards it specifically. [When I found out I’d won] I was pretty excited…Frankly numb, I was astral projecting, you know?
